For many people,Children’s Clothing is not only shreds of cloth to drape over your body to protect you from the weather and cover up the essentials. No, the clothes you wear make statements of “I only got three hours sleep and I do not give a shit” (baggy sweat pants, inside-out T-shirt and a hoodie, maybe true) to “I’m sure and everyone wants me “(a tight, maybe a little revealing, dress). Then you have T-shirts to send presidential candidate you supported, or your favorite band.
But when you have clothes ever made a statement about your culture? Enter Hola Baby, a locally owned small business recently started by former TV3 TV reporter Julie Aguirre Whitted, who sells sweet Spanish T-shirts for children. Each T-shirt, designed by Whitted and a family member, sporting nice term for a child in Spanish. Talk about literally make a statement in your culture.
“There are so many sweet words that you call the children, in English and in Spanish,” says Whitted, who spends most days at home with their children, except for a part-time gig at WFAE. “In English, you say” pumpkin “,” sweetie “,” baby. “Girl” things. It is the same in Spanish. “Mija,” which means “my daughter” … everyone will call you “mija,” from your grandmother to the waitress. It kind of means honey. “There’s” Mijo, “which means” my son. “There are just so many cute phrases that reference children. I tried to capture any funny words in Spanish and use them on T-shirts. I wanted it to be a funny picture of our Latino culture and transfer it on T-shirts and fashion and style. “
